10 must-do family plans for summer in the Sierra de Madrid

Summer is a wonderful opportunity to switch off from screens, enjoy quality family time and discover some of the most special places just a short drive from home.

The Sierra de Madrid offers nature, adventure, water, sport, culture and unforgettable experiences for all ages. At Dragon American School we have put together a selection of plans to fill this summer with special moments that your children will remember for years.

1. Cool off at Las Presillas in Rascafría

Few images capture summer in Madrid better than the famous natural pools of Las Presillas. Surrounded by mountains and meadows, with spectacular views of the El Paular valley, they are the perfect place to spend a day swimming in the middle of nature.

A simple, refreshing plan that is perfect for the whole family.

2. Go on an adventure among the trees and zip lines

If your children love action, the adventure parks in the Sierra are a safe bet. Zip lines, rope bridges, suspended nets and courses adapted to different ages let children and adults share a real outdoor adventure.

As well as having fun, they will build confidence, balance and the drive to push themselves.

3. Discover the Fuenfría valley

One of the most beautiful and accessible spots in the Sierra de Guadarrama.

Its trails through pine forests, streams and picnic areas make it an ideal outing for families with children. A perfect place to walk, breathe fresh air and reconnect with nature.

4. Look for waterfalls and hidden corners

Summer is the ideal time to become explorers for a day.

The Sierra hides real natural treasures that turn any outing into a small adventure:

  • La Charca Verde and Los Chorros del Manzanares (La Pedriza)
  • Ducha de los Alemanes (Cercedilla)
  • Cascada del Purgatorio (Rascafría)
  • Cascada del Covacho (Hoyo de Manzanares)
  • Cascadas del Hervidero (San Agustín de Guadalix)
  • Chorro de Navafría (Segovia)

Each one offers unique scenery, trails surrounded by nature and the thrill of discovering places that seem straight out of a storybook.

Important: swimming in rivers, pools and lakes is banned in much of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park to protect the ecosystem. We recommend enjoying these places for watching, walking and connecting with nature.

5. Become explorers for a day

Orienteering, geocaching and nature scavenger hunts let children learn while they play.

Following clues, finding hidden treasure and solving challenges as a team turn any outing into an experience that is both educational and fun.

6. Watch the stars and enjoy the Perseids

Summer nights have something magical about them, especially in the Sierra de Madrid, where there is much less light pollution and the sky shows itself in all its splendor.

What is more, August brings one of the most eagerly awaited astronomical events of the year: the Perseids, known in Spain as the tears of Saint Lawrence. This meteor shower peaks between August 11 and 13, when you can see dozens of shooting stars crossing the sky every hour.

You do not need a telescope or any prior knowledge. Just find a spot away from the lights, bring a blanket, lie back looking up at the sky and enjoy the show. For many children, seeing a shooting star for the first time becomes a memory they keep forever.

As well as being an exciting experience, it is a wonderful opportunity to spark curiosity about science, talk about the universe and share a moment of calm and connection as a family.

Our tip: pack a small picnic dinner, bring something warm for when it gets cooler, and do not forget to make a wish every time you see a shooting star.

7. Marvel at the fountains of La Granja de San Ildefonso

A little over an hour from Madrid is one of the most astonishing sights of our heritage: the monumental fountains in the gardens of La Granja de San Ildefonso coming to life.

These impressive baroque fountains, designed in the 18th century, work purely by gravity, with no motors at all. Watching their enormous jets of water spring into action is an experience that still amazes thousands of visitors more than 300 years later.

Several special displays take place during the summer, and one of the most eagerly awaited is the one for Saint Louis on August 25, when several of the most spectacular fountains are turned on along a unique route through the gardens.

Children love running along the paths, discovering mythological sculptures and gazing at the jets of water that shoot to spectacular heights. For adults, it is a perfect opportunity to travel back in time and discover one of the most impressive historical gems in the country.

Our tip: bring water and comfortable shoes, and arrive early to stroll through the gardens before the show. It is one of those plans that brings together nature, culture, history and beauty in a unique way.

8. Walk the legendary Camino Schmid

If there is one iconic route in the Sierra de Guadarrama, it is the Camino Schmid. This historic trail starts at the Navacerrada pass and runs through some of the most beautiful and best-preserved pine forests in the sierra, among streams, great granite boulders and spectacular mountain views.

For families with children, a great option is to walk as far as Collado Ventoso and come back the same way. The route is shaded by pines for much of the way and lets you enjoy the mountains without any real technical difficulty.

The more adventurous can extend the hike toward the Fuenfría valley and discover some of the most characteristic landscapes of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park.

9. Kayaking and water sports

For those looking to cool off in a different way, some of the reservoirs and natural areas nearby are good places to try kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or canoeing.

A fantastic way to combine sport, nature and fun.

10. Have a picnic and enjoy nature at an unhurried pace

Sometimes the simplest plans are the ones that leave the deepest mark.

Packing a basket with some food, spreading a blanket in the shade of the trees and enjoying a relaxed conversation can become one of the best moments of the summer.

Walking along trails surrounded by nature, listening to the sound of water, watching birds or simply enjoying the silence are experiences that are more and more valuable in our daily lives.

Summer is also a chance to slow down and reconnect with what really matters.

Making memories that last a lifetime

In the end, the best plans are not always the most expensive or the most spectacular.

What our children will remember are the swims, the walks together, the ice creams at the end of an outing, the nights watching the stars, the laughter during a family adventure or the thrill of discovering somewhere new together.

Because vacations are much more than a break: they are an opportunity to grow together, discover the world and build memories that will stay with us forever.

From all of us at Dragón, we wish you a summer full of nature, adventure, discovery and unforgettable family moments.

Enjoy every walk, every conversation, every sunset and every little adventure. See you in September with backpacks full of experiences, stories to tell and memories to last a lifetime.
